AGS Lab to be “Integrated Into GIA”
(IDEX Online) – The GIA, industry leader in diamond grading, is taking over the work of AGS Laboratories in what is being described as a strategic collaboration.
The AGS Laboratories research staff, intellectual property, technology and Las Vegas facility will integrate into GIA, says a joint statement issued yesterday.
Both the American Gem Society (AGS) and GIA (Gemological Institute of America) are non-profits, founded in the 1930s by Robert Shipley (1887-1978), the jeweler from Kansas, USA, who discovered a love of teaching and became a global leader in gemology. Both grading labs are regarded as standard-bearers in the diamond industry.
“This consequential agreement brings AGS and GIA even closer, driving our future with 90 years of shared history and elevating our founders’ vision,” said AGS CEO Katherine Bodoh.
She said the “exciting advancement” would allow AGS to focus on its core mission and activities.
“AGS and GIA each have their unique perspective and expertise, and a steadfast focus on advancing ethics, standards and education in the gem and jewelry industry,” she added.
“By harnessing each other’s strengths to move forward boldly, consumers will be better protected and we will ensure the longevity of the Shipleys’ vision,” said GIA President and CEO Susan Jacques.”
AGS Laboratories will continue to provide services until the end of 2022 and will contact clients with details of the transition.
