Fortune Pink Diamond Sells for $28.8m but Misses High Estimate
The 18.18-carat Fortune Pink diamond sold yesterday at Christie’s Geneva for $28.8m – above its $25m low estimate but below the $35m high estimate.
The largest pear-shaped fancy vivid pink diamond ever to be auctioned was bought by an unnamed Asian private collector after a three-way battle between telephone bidders.
The diamond, mined in Brazil more than 15 years ago, was displayed in New York, Shanghai, Taiwan and Singapore before the auction during Christie’s Luxury Week at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues.
Max Fawcett, head of Christie’s jewelry department in Geneva, said there had been a huge amount of interest in the stone.
The highest price ever paid for any pink diamond is $71.2m, by China’s biggest jeweler, Chow Tai Fook, at an auction held by Sotheby’s Hong Kong, in April 2017.
